How Not to Stay in The Middle Management and Get a Senior Leadership Position?

16 years of Corporate Communication

When I was 26, I was promoted to middle management at Volvo Group China, I had my corner office. I was the youngest in the middle management team, and I felt so grateful, but I didn’t have the confidence or felt I deserve to be there.

So, I worked hard, 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. At the time, there were 2 Directors left for maternity leave, my manager didn’t hire or add any resources. She just had me cover both of their projects. I was working 3 jobs at the same time. But I was so happy she trusted me and even let me take projects worth $6 Million.

With wide exposure through these projects, I was soon discovered by the global headquarters, promoted to the global Director job, and moved to Europe, leading a team of 31 people. Job promotion till this point was a piece of cake for me, I thought as long as I work hard and keep delivering results, the next promotion just comes to me automatically.

There is a saying what got you here, will not get you there…

3 years passed, and I was still at the same job, my income increased only as much as the cost of living by 1-2% a year.

4 years passed, and I changed to another Director level job, but I would not call this a promotion.

5 years, 6 years passed, and I remained at the Director level…

Inside, I was frustrated at my slow growth.

In year 7, things clicked for me, and I started to change internally.

In year 8 since I become the Director, I was promoted to Vice President.

Since then, many more doors opened.

Not only did I become the must-have on each board presentation agenda.

My opinions were valued by the top, I got invited to strategic discussions and negotiations with top executives;

I had access to confidential meetings and large projects that I used to be curious about.

I often spoke and moderate at summits and conferences with thousands of audience.

Bigger jobs and C-suite positions started to land on my table.

I got the level of income, packages, travel in business classes, a luxurious company car, and many more benefits I dreamed of.

Going from middle to the top took me 10 years, with months and years of feeling lost and frustrated, making mistakes, and wasting time and money on the wrong things.

What if you can get a shortcut, access to all my hard-earned knowledge and mistakes?

A Little More About Me

I am a mom of a 3-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, the wife of my Belgian husband. We live in Belgium with our Border Collie dog. We speak English, French, and Chinese at home.

I was born in Shanghai to a low-income family, but my two professional dreams are nowhere near low:

1. Reach the top of corporate ladder, be a woman of success.

2. Become a self-made entrepreneur, be a woman of value.

Started as an English teacher in Shanghai, and at age of 36, I became the Vice President of a 41 billion Euro company with 100,000 employees.

I am on my way to reach my second professional dream.
